To bring up a game that can be depressing in an unexpected way, nothing can destroy your hope quite as effectively as having your entire army routed in Shogun 2 Total War only for the game to then crash.

The ending to 'Shadow Of the Colossus' really got to me. i guess that feeling is amplifed even more if you've ever fallen in love with someone. To go through Hell and back to save your love, only to lose her in the end is very depressing.

I love how amazing the sequence of events is that leads up to this event. Fire Emblem has some amazing writing and gameplay execution.

However, I just remembered the most depressing video game ever

Did you know you can make either of them wait in the town alone, waiting for their partner right up until the dawn of the fourth day when the world is destroyed? It's extremely bleakly depressing.

I've been looking to such things in videogames, and except Shadow of the Colossus, and Silent hill 2 there is no "depressing" video game, although there's a lot of fragments and glimpses of depressing things in various scenes from many games (Recently on Chrono Trigger, Earthbound... etc.), I can't seem to find a whole game doing in that atmosphere, which is a shame.

MGS3, the ending, MGS4 the first ending, SH3 where you arrive home, SH1 bad ending, the FBI guy's bad ending in Heavy Rain.

Got to play SH2 some day. If I find a copy for PC or PS2 anyway.

Animal Crossing (GC)- Laugh it up, but if you ever played it in your childhood, you'd understand.
You develop strong nostalgic feelings for it. :'(
I started playing it on Game Cube when I was 13. It's a simple, cutesy game. Meet your animal neighbors, run errands, pick fruit, go fishing, send letters, and decorate your house. Sounds like a friggin Facebook Game...
The definite draw to it was the fact that time passes in the game like normal IRL time, so you do get to celebrate holidays and other fun little days~!
New neighbors will move in, and older neighbors move away (if you don't spend enough time with them).
So I got busy with life. Time passes and I decided to check it out when I was 19.
Holy. Crap.
The town was over-run with weeds! Beloved animal neighbors had moved away while the ones who remained were upset and asked where I had gone.
My house was infested with cockroaches and my mailbox was full of letters sent to me from the animals, and my inventory had old letters I had written when I was 13.
It was an experience full of forgotten memories and a reminder that I was getting older, and older... @__@
Enjoy getting your heart ripped out!

Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time:
The whole Saria and Link friendship. D:

I mean... JEEZ! It's so doomed.
Saria will always be... your friend... ;_ ;

Spec Ops: The Line

White Phosphurus

I never recall going through a scene this... odd in a Third Person Shooter before.

Final Fantasy X is depressing as all get-out when the big revelation finally hits, and then from there straight through to the end (which is still hours and hours away).

Add to that the financial failure of Squaresoft immediately after, and BLAM. Heartbreaking.
